Eating Healthy

by Bob Joblin on February 3, 2015
The old axiom is true: You are what you eat.  Therefore, if you eat healthy, you improve your overall health.  Unfortunately, the opposite is also true.

With that in mind, members of the St Margaret’s family explored eating health and living healthy for the past five weeks, from sugar-free to gluten-free to Paleo diets.  They were joined by experts dedicated to healthy eating, including Paula Dempsey from Dempsey Bakery, Ryan Merritt-McGehee from Clean Eatery, and Dr. John Vincent from Wellness Revolution, and they prepared nutritious and good-tasting organic dishes.

About 70% of the foods we eat are now from genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and we really do not know what nutritional values we are getting from what we are eating.  These GMOs have been labeled “FrankenFoods,” because of their laboratory mutations.  We literally do not know what the biological changes are, but we do know that tomatoes no longer taste as good as what we ate as children and the term “mystery meat” is no longer a joke.  We also know that there are more and more health issues with “FrankenFoods,” not the least of which is obesity.

Eating healthy is a simple and enjoyable alternative to the unhealthy consequences of the “American diet” of fast foods, processed foods, chemical-drenched foods and sugar-saturated foods.  There is a series of documentaries that explore the “American diet” and what it has done to our health, including “Origins,” “Food Matters,” “Fed Up,” “The Future of Food,” “King Corn,” “Food, Inc,” “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead,” “Supersize Me,” “Fork over Knives,” “Fast Food Nation” and “Genetic Revolution.”  Many of these and others are available free on the internet.

And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which [is] upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which [is] the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.  -  Genesis 1:29

Should it be any surprise that what God provides naturally is the best for us?
